2019 Family Leadership Institute

The Family Leadership Institute (FLI) is a free, 60-hour, six-weekend intensive training program for parents and caregivers of school-age children with mental health challenges. Funding for this program is provided by the Maryland State Department of Education.

By participating in the Family Leadership Institute, you will: 

  • Build your knowledge of children’s mental health and learn how to access supports for your family
  • Learn how to work more collaboratively with your school on behalf of your child
  • Become a more effective leader and advocate for children and youth with mental health challenges 
  • Meet and hear from presenters who are experts and leaders in children's mental health in Maryland
  • Make strong connections with other parents and caregivers facing similar challenges to share information, stories and support

2019 Program Details:

When:  Friday evenings, 5:00 - 9:00 pm (dinner included), and Saturdays, 9:00 am - 4:00 pm (lunch included)

Cost: There is no cost to participants. This is a fully-funded program that includes meals and shared lodging.

Lodging: Lodging is included, but not required, on the Friday night of each weekend. Rooms are double occupancy (2 people). If you are attending by yourself and wish to stay in the hotel, we will assign you a room with another FLI participant. Couples will share a room.

Financial Assistance for Transportation or Child Care: Limited financial assistance is available to those with need. Based upon available funds, limited assistance may be provided for child care and transportation expenses related to attendance at FLI.

Space is limited and applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.

Rescheduling due to inclement weather will occur if needed.

Application Process:

The FLI application process consists of two parts:

  1. Respond to a series of questions about yourself and your child/children (click below to begin your application), commit to attend all sessions, and
  2. Submission of one (1) letter of recommendation from a non-family member who can testify to your experience in advocating for your child and motivation to become a leader in your home, school and/or community.
